boiler filters

Are boiler filters worth it? Put simply, yes, it’s definitely worth investing in a boiler filter. Fortunately much more commonplace in today’s market than ever before, these filters are designed to catch any unwanted debris and wastage circulating throughout your system. Being mostly constructed from metal and obviously containing water boilers can be a breeding ground for rust. This can in turn create metal sludge which, if not stopped, can clog up radiators, towel rails, and worse, your boiler.

Are your radiators often hot at the top but won’t heat up at the bottom?  That is a common symptom of sludge build up. The filter will catch this sludge and prevent this from happening; saving your heating system, and you money.

If you’ve never had a filter and are experiencing issues we would also recommend powerflushing beforehand, this will cleanse and rejuvenate your heating system before installing the filter to prevent future build up.

There are certainly plenty of boiler filters out there but the two that we commonly recommend and install are:

The MagnaClean Range

Arguably the biggest supplier of filters within the UK, MagnaClean have a diverse and extensive filter range with something to suit every boiler type. Prices start from around £80+ and are similar to most competitors in the market. The MagnaClean Micro model is a popular choice for some but we personally recommend going for a larger version if your budget can stretch slightly.

The Fernox Range

As one of the most reputable brands in the boiler filter industry Fernox supply some very impressive filters that are excellent value for money. Their TFI model is a favourite with our engineers and can be supplied and installed with any new boilers purchased.

Do you think you need a Powerflush?

Power Flushing

“Powerflushing” is a cleansing process which has the ability to remove sludge, rust and other debris that could be clogging up your central heating system.

This build-up of sludge can have a detrimental effect on your heating systems efficiency and Powerflushing is considered the best method to solve it. In some extreme cases, sludge can be so damaging that a complete boiler replacement is required.

If you’re experiencing any of the below issues it would suggest that you require a powerflush:

Cold areas on radiators (especially at the bottom)

Excessive noise from the boiler or the heating system pump

Discoloured water when you bleed the radiators or no water escapes at all

Heating is slow to warm up or some radiators struggle to heat up as much as others

Radiators cold but pipes are hot

Boiler regularly shuts down and needs restarting

Noisy radiators and or / boiler

By having a regular annual service a Powerflush should only be necessary every five years or so to help clear debris and prevent any significant blockages from taking a firm hold. If you are planning to replace your boiler soon it may be worth considering a Powerflush before the installation, one of our engineers will be able to advise you on this. You don’t want to risk contaminating the new boiler with any damaging sludge and debris that’s hanging around in the old pipework.

The main benefits of carrying out this cleanse are:

Radiators will heat up quicker and get hotter

Quieter radiators / boiler

Cheaper energy bills as a result of a more efficient system

Higher hot water temperatures

Increase the life of your heating system

The whole process typically takes one full day or less depending on the number of radiators in your home, the age of the system and the severity of the sludge in the system. Please always use a qualified engineer as carrying out the work on your heating system by yourself may invalidate any manufacturer’s warranty you have and could potentially be harmful and extremely messy if not performed correctly.

Smart Heating Controls

“Smart” home heating systems have continued to grow in popularity over the past few years. Their main purpose is to allow you to control your home heating temperature and hot water tank (if you have one) from anywhere. You can also set timings and schedules to come one or off too.

We have tried and tested many different devices over the years and our favourite has to be the Hive Active Heating system for its intuitive display, clever features and strong reliability compared to some of its competitors. It’s definitely a worthy piece of kit for anyone looking to have this kind of flexibility in their household. Once installed, you simply change any of the settings from the app on your phone or on the interface of the thermostat itself.

If you’re thinking of buying a new boiler from us these can make a great addition and our partner firm, Home Electrical Services, can fit and install these devices from around £250+VAT. It’s quite easy to recoup the money spent if you’re conservative with the temperature you select and the timing schedule you have in place.
